The Cardboard Garden

Cardboard Garden

The Cardboard Garden is a test picked up from gardeners in England that use cardboard laid down first and mounded with compost and soil. This is to help avoid weeds and eliminates the need to roto-till, which wreaks havoc with soil life. For the soil, I used recycled nursery media. The test is planted with carrots, spinach and a lot of different salads such as romaine and mesculin mix.

Both the fall seeded spinach and carrots were seeded late last fall, were allowed to germinate and grow and then were covered with Tunnel Covers as frost started to occur. The spinach took off when the cover was removed. Spinach loves cooler weather. My family has enjoyed several spinach salads and we had spinach in our steak fajitas. I have not tried to harvest the carrots yet but will soon.

Kales have become very popular so I am trying different varieties to look at taste and colors- seeing how attractive they are in the garden.
