Clover Q & A with Craig

Recently, we received this question from one of our Tipp City Community Gardeners –

Question:

Craig – what is up with all the clover planted along the pathways and along the inside edge of “my” plot? Won’t the clover attract rabbits? And spread like crazy? I plan to take out the edge between my plot and the one right next to it, because that is not a path and I think it will spread too fast. It looked almost like someone planted a row of clover in the middle of my plot. I got the other weeds in the plot removed tonight but I think they must have missed my plot when they cultivated and I need more than a hoe to remove the clover. I hope to work on it more tomorrow. I would really like to understand the clover in the pathways.

Answer:

I planted the clover in the pathways. I have also been mixing it with low maintenance slow growing grass seed. The benefits of clover in this case are that it does spread and will keep the pathways covered, which is my goal. It can be walked on without damaging it. The really big benefit is that it is a nitrogen fixer and pulls nitrogen from the air and makes it available for plants. Obviously it will spread into the plots, but a 2 minute hoe when you are at your plot will stop it from taking over. On the rabbits, I think they are attracted to all our vegetables rather than the clover!
